Witchy 101: Meditation and Visualization

“The shape of things is first discovered in the mind”

Back in the 90s (that was what, 6 years ago?) my first Taekwondo Sensei spent a lot of time with my class on meditation and visualization. The teaching stuck, and the “dim candle in a dark room” method was my mindfulness rock for years.

Even now, my “magical mindfulness” technique is simply a modification of this, and I offer a version of it now for you to try, adjust and use to perfect your own routine.

Start by getting into a comfortable position, seated cross legged tends to be best for me. Close your eyes, count from zero to ten and back down again, pay attention to your breath at let it slow.

When you reach zero again visualize in your mind that you are seated in a room that is completely dark, save for a small candle on the floor before you. Its light is barely enough to illuminate your hands even sitting just a foot away. Let everything beyond the light fall away, you are no longer in a room with a light, you and the light are alone together in a space just yours.

Picture your energy, your aura, emanating from your body begin to meet and clash with the candle’s dim light, while you watch the light show unfold, explore how your aura is feeling, its color and identify what it needs. Soothing? An invigorating lift? A complete cleanse? Or maybe it needs nothing but to spend some time in this still place with just you and the candle light.

Picture the conflicting colors of your energy and the candle, notice as they begin to merge, mixing into a singular hue. It’s not clear what color it is going to become, and you have the power to shape it! Make it whatever color you want. It doesn’t even have to be tied to auras, alignments or attunements. Pick whatever color YOU want. Favorite color aquamarine? Make it shine! Deep Olive green or deep purple (my peeps)? You’ll glow just as bright in those dark hues.

The space will not change, you will not change, but by shaping the space created by your mind to suit your mind’s desires, you have taken the first step to mastering your mind.

Visualizing Outcomes and Intentions

Once you have explored visualization in a meditative state, you can start working with visualization in all aspects of your craft. When setting intentions one of the most powerful tools you can use is visualization. You can visualize all possibilities, you can visualize how you change and feel with different outcomes, you can start to fully explore and understand your desires so that your intent rings true.

Say you are looking to attract money, so you attempt to cast a wealth attracting spell. As you are setting your intent for your spell you visualize several scenarios of how you might obtain that money. You see a vision of a lottery ticket providing a small sum, you see a glimpse of a dear family member fading, you see a career change and you see starting a side hustle.

While winning the lottery would feel great, that isn’t exactly the long term stability you were hoping for. Losing a family member is not worth any sum, so that path was not explored. You visualize a career change and experience a mixture of excitement and fear. The unknown is troubling, but the potential for growth is exciting! You also explore a second or gig job, you spend a little more time here trying out different roles, ridesharing, delivery, reselling, freelance writing (Shameless: for hire) and you see a number of paths that COULD be interesting but you’re just not sure.

At this point, explore the path that is most appealing the one that is calling and see what it looks like in your future down that path! If you find that it is not the path you desire, double back and try another! If there are simply too many paths and you feel no pull, perhaps you should pivot on your intent and instead look for clarity.

You’d feel more confident about a career change, if you knew the field you would go to, you’d be more sure about a gig job if you knew you would enjoy it (and actually earn something) so perhaps you set an intent to open up to calls for guidance in order to find your new profession or side hustle.

You may find while researching potential options after casting that you feel calls in certain directions. The next time you visualize-explore those paths first.

Meditating to soothe and cleanse the mind and your energy are essential, and if you can work visualization into your mindfulness practices you will skyrocket your magical attunement. The more you explore the infinite, the more confident you’ll become walking among its echoes.

I highly suggest keeping a dedicated visualization journal. It can be helpful to notice reoccurring imagery or events that are trying to alert you to something currently beyond your awareness!
