Tesla knew, and his efforts focusing on the importance of frequency and vibration resonates so closely with elements of magic, it is hard to deny this as yet another thread of truth. It is no wonder crystals have been so involved in spirituality and humans have naturally been drawn to collecting and even wearing them.
Crystals, gemstones and other treasures from nature allow us to capture and carry potent magical attunements to work with specific energies to achieve our goals and manifest our dreams to reality.
There are endless resources available online and at libraries on what crystal to use for which ailment, what stones will best attune you to specific elements, and some of the most elaborate rituals you can imagine. As always I will say, there is no wrong way to be magical, and just because crystals are used for one purpose, does not mean they cannot be used for something different if you feel that call!
We’ll talk more about how to shop for the crystals that are calling to you below, but first I will give you a quick intro to some of the most useful crystals for white witches and wizards like myself, I intend to do deep dive research pieces on different magical item going forward, so if there’s a particular crystal you’d like me to give that treatment reach out or put it in the comments!
Lets talk Crystals

These really are just the tip of the iceberg for magical crystals. If you go to any gemstone/crystal supply shop you will likely be overwhelmed at all of the options. I’d encourage you to browse and examine the crystals that call to you, but if you’re the type of person who likes to go with a general idea of what they’re looking for, here’s my short list of most important picks:
Rose Quartz: This stone is so incredibly magical. This stone emanates love and emotional support and can help soothe fears of the past and present. I quite often have a few loose pieces around my altar and until recently had a small piece attached to my keys (it broke free when I didn’t notice and returned to nature). This is the crystal that heals you from the inside out and I can’t recommend it enough!
Amethyst: Can help you attune with the wisdom of air while promoting spiritual healing and providing a grounding sense of calm. As a purple hued quartz, it shares many of the healing properties of the other quartz crystals in this list and I wear a piece wrapped in wire daily.
Clear Quartz: This is the empath’s best friend. It promotes emotional balance, it wards away negative energy and can help promote harmony within you and with the world. Its semi opaque takes in all, and lets through only the distilled light, purified of any negative energy, it is a cleansing powerhouse!
Obsidian: Stunning pieces of volcanic glass that are grounding and healing super giants! Clear quartz wards away negative energy, Obsidian obliterates it! It blocks, absorbs and transforms it readily, and will draw out your stress and tension and promote positive growth within your subconscious. I prefer more raw pieces with lots of natural facets showing, but there are some truly remarkable polished obelisks that can make a beautiful piece of your altar! It also looks great with silver or gold jewelry!
Rutilated Quartz: Is a recent favorite crystal for me. It is quartz that has a multitude of golden needlelike inclusions made of rutile, a mineral containing titanium. It is utterly stunning to view and it has so many magical properties. It boosts creativity and your spiritual connection by easing emotional concerns and promoting mental clarity. It is the ultimate good vibes stone and has become a stable for all of my spells.
Bloodstone: This is a bonus for my trans sibs! Bloodstone is absolutely incredible in soothing hormonal imbalances. Completing a mindfulness ritual, or meditating with a piece or two can help things “even out” or get you through rough swings or help ground you through changes. It is highly recommended for cis women for similar reasons as the emotional/hormonal healing provided by this superstar can aid those who have the DLC pack for emotions installed.
Shopping for Crystals

Did one of the crystals mentioned catch your interest? Maybe multiple ones? If so, don’t rush to your favorite .com to order them just yet, instead hit up your favorite search engine (or your magically inclined friends) to find a local seller where you’ll see buckets, jars and shelves of crystals for you to choose from and find the right one for you. It is so much better than just waiting for the one that gets assigned to you at the warehouse to arrive.
When you arrive at your chosen store, don’t rush off to find the crystal you want, pay and get out. Take your time to explore the store, check out the crystals when you arrive to that section, but walk through the dreamcatchers, the rows of divination decks, the intoxicating allure of too many incense smells piled onto one wall, the curiosities that you’re not entirely sure the purpose of. Wander, and wonder while you wander about the sheer force of all of the magic contained in your local shop. It is just one reason among many why whenever possible you should shop local and support your local keepers of magic.
When you come to the section that contains crystals, or the section with the type or style of crystals you are seeking, take your time viewing all of the options. Sometimes you may glance at a small wood bowl filled with a dozen small fluorites and immediately say “THAT ONE IS MINE!” and snatch it up without a second thought, other times you may go through an entire bowl of rose quartz and be really disappointed that you didn’t really like any of the pieces, but then JUST as you turn to go, you notice a piece you swear wasn’t there before. You may go looking for some obsidian and end up leaving with a few pieces of hematite that you just NEEDED for some reason.
If you recall when I discussed calls on the front page of the basics section, when shopping for any magical items, following calls is the way to go, but even more so for crystals. One of the most magical crystals I’ve acquired on my journey to date is a piece of rainbow bismuth that I very nearly did not buy, but the entirety of the time after setting it down I sensed I was making a mistake it was screaming at me across the store to come back. Reclaiming it a few minutes later was one of the best choices I’ve made, as it has served me so well.
Which is why, even though crystals will often be sold with a note as to what they provide, what they promote, what they with help you manifest or heal in your reality. If you feel that chunk of apatite marketed for improving focus and clearing confusion is actually going to help you sleep better, you’re probably right! Trust your instincts, they are your most powerful magical gift, and they will guide you to the incredible gifts nature provides to unlock your power.
