“The healer you have been looking for is your own courage to know and love yourself completely.” Yung Pueblo
Think of a time your emotions have been running high. Good or bad, they’re just high. How would you describe your energy level? Buzzing? Overflowing? How did it impact your behavior? Was it hard to focus on work? Were you making impulsive decisions left and right? Did you feel like you could run through a brick wall and keep going? Excess energy can be useful, and can be applied to great pursuits, but even then it can cause you to burn out like a supernova when the flow runs dry.
Likewise, consider a time where your emotions vacated your body to such a level you were just a husk shuffling along. Your light was gone and every single thing, from getting out of bed and brushing your teeth, to eating cold food requiring no prep was a chore. You zest has vanished and you feel trapped at sea waiting for a breeze to guide you along as you float and drift, disconnected.
When your energy is at either extreme, things can be unmanageable. Having a ritual or method to bring you back to baseline, or at least bring you closer to that grounded normal is an essential skill.
No matter where your energy is on the spectrum, even if you are already feeling very grounded and centered, practicing grounding and centering rituals are one of the cornerstones of building your magical attunement to the world.
There are several techniques you can use to learn to ground and center your energy and aura and in doing so, you’ll start to learn to work with the energy of the world, and build a relationship to carry along your journey.
Visualization is one of the simplest ways, and I will cover a great basic daily practice below that can be modified for use at anytime.
If visualization is not your preference you can instead ground and center yourself simply with your senses.
Sight: Close your eyes. Close your eyes and take a few deep breath. The calmness of the moment is where you begin.
Sound: Use a white noise or soundscape generator to block out unwanted noise, or play a favorite song, listen to a podcast, queue up your favorite comfort Youtuber’s playlist. Whatever lets your ears focus in and ignore all else. If you’re lucky enough to live rurally, enjoy the silence or accent it with a bell or any of the prior sound options. The sound or silence resonating with your core will center your spirit.
Smell: If you live somewhere with clean air and are able to go outside-do so and simply smell the air. Pay attention to every scent you note, the good and the bad, reflect on the simplicity, the complexity, and enjoy it all. If you live somewhere where the air outside is not something you’d enjoy smelling even in reflection, or you can’t make it outside, incense or candles are a great option. Let the scent fill the space and then breath it deeply and preform the same reflective analysis of every scent you note
Taste: Drink water. You should be doing this anyway, but take a small sip of water anytime you need to feel a little grounded, and pay extra attention to the entirety of the process. From the moment it touches your lips, to the moment it’s absorbed by your stomach, focusing on this simple but sustaining action can bring a moment of calm to any chaos, when combined with the other senses, it is incredibly grounding and restorative.
Touch: Touch grass. Quite literally, go outside and take a second to connect with nature. No visualization or extra steps necessary. Go outside, place your palms on the ground for a moment, run your fingers through the grass, combine it with smell and pet the petals of the flowers you smell, just take a breath and enjoy your new found stability.
Taking a moment to reset all of your senses either simultaneously or in rapid succession is a quick and easy way to reset and center yourself.
Daily Practice
There will eventually be a section of my site dedicated to rituals, but I believe establishing a daily grounding ritual is vital so will put forth a modified grounding ritual for daily use that is very beginner friendly!
(This ritual is a modification of one found in Arin Murphy-Hiscock’s The Witch’s Book of Self-Care, I highly suggest you check out this author’s work! Especially if you are interested in more green magic!!)
Close your eyes and place your hand on your heart, chest, stomach or any other place that feels like the center you want to ground from. Pay attention as heat begins to build between your palm and body, once this warmth is noticeable assign it color, it can be any color of your choosing.
Picture this color as an energy beginning to emanate from where your hand is resting. Instead of letting this energy waft around you, direct it downward to the ground, forcing the rest of your aura to follow it. Let it travel down your body, through your feet, into the floor or ground and visualize it seeping into the Earth, dropping like a molten cannonball through Styrofoam plummeting to the Earth’s core, connecting and grounding you and your energy to the very center of our planet, and allowing some of Earth’s energy to fill you in return.
If you are feeling an excess of energy, let the excess bleed off along the long trail to the Earth’s core, connecting and resetting your aura to a more manageable baseline. If you are in need of an energy top up, this is the perfect moment to draw upon natures gifts, to restore your spirit and revitalize your soul.
Whatever state you are in, when you offer your energy, be sure to accept the Earth’s in return, allow this exchange to happen for as long as it needs to until you feel, well, grounded and centered, and ready to attack your day, cast your next spell, or settle in with a good book.
