“Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves” –Philippians 2:3:
Wait, a bible verse? On a witchy site?? Don’t leave just yet- please hear me out as I share a little about my worldview on faith and magic
As part of my quest to understand my magic, I sought out several leaders of local congregations to have dialogues on a range of issues, seeking knowledge to expand my worldview, and trying to find some truth. Some of these dialogues have gone incredible (Thank you so much Pastor Susan, we’re overdue for a catchup chat!) others have been more lukewarm or outright dangerous.
I was seeking answers to very specific questions about faith and trans folks like myself, as well as a few targeted doctrine questions. The way the story was told was different each time, the message, the “pitch” could vary drastically from faith to faith, but I got my answers, and no, I wasn’t converted. But I did feel enlightened. After speaking with multiple faiths, getting different answers to the same questions, much like with my spells, I returned to my journal, applied research and distilled the threads of truth from the many tales weaved before me.
If you’ve never tried thinking and learning this way, it’s quite an interesting experience. For example, when I see a news article that catches my eye, I like to read multiple articles about the same event. Sometimes you’ll find a story is being told in a completely different way that changes your perception. When you read multiple stories, you notice the differences, but you also notice the similarities. Those similarities are the facts, the threads you can trust to weave your own version of events adding your opinions.
What you will see here, is my weaving based on the threads I’ve found and the experiences I’ve had.
The threads of truth I found learning from other faiths converged with much of what I had already felt and expected. Call it motivated perception, but I was amazed to find that their individual faiths not only connected and exchanged with each other so readily, but also with magic, and while no single faith will ever ring true to me, I am confident in these beliefs:
“There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.” – Edith Wharton
I believe that there is an energy to the world that binds and connects all things in endless cycles. I believe as magical beings we are uniquely capable of attuning to and working with this energy to shape these cycles. I believe when the energy enters you, you are responsible for how it leaves and returns to the cycle. I believe when you attune to negative energy, you can replace it with positivity, and in healing the hurt and spreading the light, I believe you promote more positivity and light, not only for yourself, but for your community and the world.
The following is the foundations of magic as I have come to understand them, presented with my experience and suggestions to guide your journey. As with any piece of information, it is only as useful as it is current, and so I will frequently revisit these pages to add or revise as I continue learning and growing. Add your thoughts or experience in the comments and help shape this future!!
Whatever you believe I hope these pages will guide you in your efforts to spread positivity and light, I believe we can make this world so much brighter together in our own ways. Perhaps one day we may even banish the dark energy that taints our world for good.
Never stop being magical ~Zed
