“The expert in anything was once a beginner” – Helen Hayes
Before you can learn the finer parts of anything, you need to first learn and appreciate the very basic. Magic is no different. In my opinion it’s easiest to get started with witchcraft by simply following calls and learning as you go, however if you’re having a hard time hearing those calls or don’t know where to start I hope this primer will open up your higher senses and start your journey.
What is a call?
Has there ever been a time in your life where your senses were burning telling you something even if you didn’t know what? Maybe it was to buy that knickknack that happened to become your Aunt’s favorite heirloom next Christmas. Maybe while playing outside you feel an urge to run inside for something, and JUST after the door closes behind you, a monstrous thunderstorm rages through. There hadn’t been a cloud or rumble moments ago, but ‘something’ called you and you reacted. Calls are cues to our instincts.
Unfortunately through many dark ages, witch hunts and trials, many of us numbed our senses to certain calls, especially the calls of nature and magic. Fortunately? It’s easy to reattune these senses!
As you become aware of more and more calls, as you answer them and see where they lead, keep note. Whether in a book of shadows, diary, journal or phone (last resort, pen to paper seriously is the best), keep records of the events that YOU make happen when you head one of these calls. The people you meet, the places you go, the lessons you learn. Everything happens for a reason, and the early days of exploring and embracing your magic are something to cherish, and reflecting back later will be simply magical.
